Nexight Group is happy to welcome Matt Pembleton to the team as our new Research & Communications Consultant. Matt has a PhD from American University and strong professional interest in government and public policy. We sat down with Matt to ask him a few questions about himself, his views, and his new role at Nexight.
Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: I have a PhD in history and focus mainly on issues related to national security and U.S. public health and safety. I’m a specialist in drug policy and wrote a book on the nation’s first drug cops. I’ve also worked as a part-time history professor for many years and am fresh off a project examining the history of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
I’m mostly interested in the dilemmas that crop up around government and thorny public policy issues that involve a lot of complexity and don’t necessarily have easy answers.
I’ve lived in the DC region for most of my life and when I’m not doing a deep dive into wonky policy issues, I like to get outdoors and enjoy good food and drink.
Q: Why did you decide to join Nexight Group?
A: Because I needed work (kidding)! I looked at a number of opportunities as I transitioned out of academia and was really impressed with the culture at Nexight and the caliber of the work. And it’s turned out to be a great fit for someone who’s interested in the nexus of government, science, health, and security.
Q: Why did you pursue a career in professional consulting?
A: When I decided to get a PhD in history, it was always my intention to try to steer a course toward a career dealing with public policy. I particularly like how consulting offers the opportunity to be involved in the policy process but also provides a bit of separation from some of the political pressures that go with that. And it’s also just an opportunity to work on a range of really interesting and pressing issues.
Q: What are you most looking forward to about your new role at Nexight?
A: I’m looking forward to working with a lot of talented people and diving into a variety of policy dilemmas to help meet our clients’ needs.
