At Nexight, we pride ourselves on the work we do—technology roadmapping, tabletop exercises, survey development, and meeting facilitation, among other things—to make a difference in the world around us. We also take time to enjoy ourselves, whether savoring platefuls of food as part of a potluck, celebrating a new addition to our team, or simply enjoying the view from the Nexight patio. In 2018, we began a concerted effort to work with our own community to apply our skills to help others in need and make a positive impact.
The first Nexight Serves community service activity took place in May 2018 at the Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which houses families of seriously ill children participating in NIH research. We served dinner to more than 60 people during our visit, coordinating our work to prepare, serve, and clean up the meal we made. We have also collaborated with A Wider Circle, a group that combats poverty in Maryland and Washington, D.C. In December 2018, we helped sort items for distribution from their Center for Community Service; we also donated a total of $1,120 to the organization to support members of our community in need of assistance.
Just a few weeks ago, a group of intrepid Nexight employees (pictured) set out through the sweltering Washington, D.C. summer heat to serve lunch to more than 100 community members by partnering with Shepherd’s Table, an organization whose mission is to aid people who are homeless or otherwise struggling with basic needs such as meals, medical support, and clothing. Our tasks included preparing the meal area, serving the food, and cleaning up the dining room.
Working as a team outside the office in these Nexight Serves opportunities reminds us of the values of collaboration and engagement and highlights how we can use our experience to give back to our community. We are already looking forward to our next volunteer opportunity, with a focus on helping individuals with professional development needs. If you are aware of an organization that would be a good fit for us, please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
